CHARM SCHOOL: Family Gathering Ethics at Iftar

by Leonore Dicker

While every Arab country has different traditions when it comes to Iftar (which can be found here), one thing remains the same: solid Family ethics. During this holy month of Ramadan, it is important to put family issues aside.

While you might feel on edge, make sure to remain calm and positive. It is important to view these gatherings as beautiful family time to celebrate love and religion.

Always bring something with you when you are invited to a family member’s home. Whether it’s food for the breaking of the fast, or a small gift, like a candle, it is crucial not to come empty handed. This little gesture will most definitely be appreciated.

Once you’ve arrived, make sure to be useful in any possible way. You could set the table or help clear out the dishes – either way, it is important to help out. Your host will very much appreciate the effort and might one day return the favor.

Once Iftar has kicked off, try to ask everyone about their day. A bit of attention can go a long way. Truly listen to what each person has to say, and never interrupt anyone. If you disagree with what someone is saying and your opinion could cause an argument, try to keep it to yourself. While this may be difficult, do remember that this solution is less of a burden than ruining the gathering altogether because of a silly quarrel!

If you are inviting, when serving the food it is essential to start with the elderly, as it is a form of respect. Do ensure that they are at ease and bring them home after the meal is finished. As for your children, let them know the importance of being on their best behavior. You want to avoid them disrupting the gathering.

And Remember:

-To be punctual

-Not to overstay your welcome

-To remain polite, helpful and positive
