CHARM SCHOOL: How to Write a Proper “Thank You” Card

by Leonore Dicker

Whenever you’re invited to something –whether it be a dinner party or a proper celebration– it is absolutely crucial to send out a “Thank You” note the following day. This will show the host that you have impeccable manners.

Unless your handwriting is barely legible, do make sure to write the note by hand with a fountain pen. This personal touch will show the receiver that you’ve really put some effort into it. Another important detail is the actual stationary. The final result will look much nicer if you’ve used premium correspondence cards with your name tastefully engraved.

Always write the person’s surname on the envelope as follows “Mr. & Mrs. X”. If you know the recipient well enough, address them by their first name on the actual card and write “Dear Hiba”, for instance. No matter what, do not misspell the person’s name!

Keep the actual text short and only include three or four sentences. Make sure to mention something specific about the gift or event.

You may also send a thank you note to someone who has helped you with something or given you advice.

If you truly do not have the time to send out a card, we strongly urge you to send an email or call the hosts to thank them by phone instead. No matter what: a thank you is always in order!

And remember to send it out the next day or within the following week!
