A Conversation with Giles Deacon

by Leonore Dicker

With London Fashion Week just around the corner, what better way to jumpstart the week than a one on one with designer Giles Deacon.

A man of many talents, we sat down with the British designer to discuss his inspirations, what he thinks is the most elegant thing a woman could wear and where he’s going next in the Middle East.

You once said that you liked “using all sorts of people” in your design process. What type of person inspired your latest collection?
I love people who are strong, diverse characters. In essence, chic with a quirk of flamboyance.

The way you “unintentionally” made your way into the fashion industry is pretty inspiring. Do you have any tips for up-and-coming designers?
The tip I would give is work hard, be nice to people and have confidence in your ideas and vision.

If fashion somehow collapsed tomorrow – which field would you want to work in?
I would like to work as an animal illustrator. Plenty of exotic travel and no fashion people.

You said back in 2008 that you weren’t interested in designing wedding dresses. What made you change your mind?
I got convinced that designing wedding dresses could actually be fun, so we started doing them. Though I am very selective with whom for.

Do you reckon you’d design your own bride’s gown?
No way, too much bad luck!

You’re an avid gardener. Is there anything else about you that might surprise us and does your passion ever inspire your work?
I’m a Michelin star cook! I keep that very secret.

How would you describe your ideal woman’s style? According to you, what is the most elegant thing a woman could wear?
I like a style where the clothes are worn in an interesting personal way, rather than a total look, and I love giving the confidence of not giving a damn. The most elegant thing to wear is a piece that is intensely personal.

Who is your ultimate fashion icon?
My ultimate fashion icon is a cross between Lauran Bacall and Kate Moss.

Any fashion trends you wish to see more of this coming year?
Interesting trends this year are to be a greater influence on tailoring. More color and super bold embroideries.

What’s your favorite spot in the Middle East?
Every time I go to the Middle East, I find a new area to fall in love with. I am looking forward to my next trip where I am going to Qatar for the first time. Any tips?

Giles can be found exclusively at Per Lei Couture in Doha, Qatar.
