The Rise of the Celebrity Ad Campaign

by Yalda Zacca

Gone are the days when super models dominate the magazines. From Kim Kardashian to Julia Roberts, more and more celebrities are representing fashion brands in advertising campaigns around the world.

Designers are becoming best friends with reality TV stars and the stars are becoming fashionistas – i.e. the Riccardo Tisci and Kim Kardashian duo. Tisci, Givenchy’s Creative Director, is notorious for his celebrity fused Instagram account and Balmain’s 27-year old Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing is following suit. In fact, Rousteing’s Spring 2015 menswear campaign featuring Kanye and Kim Kardashian West made headlines before it even hit magazine stands thanks to Kardashian’s sneak peak, posted on her Instagram account.

Other brands are playing the same card more selectively. Céline’s latest campaign, for example, uses literary cool girl, Joan Didion. The 80-year old writer was the intelligent style icon of the ‘70s - one that we can certainly imagine being a muse of Phoebe Philo.

To keep up, models are becoming celebrities in their own right via Instagram and other social outlets. A case in point is Cara Delevingne who shot to unimaginable global fame thanks to her millions of followers on Instagram.

Undoubtedly, these campaigns have received unequivocal media attention with thousands of Instagram likes and millions of new followers. Here are the Spring 2015 celebrity ad campaigns that have made waves in the fashion sphere.
