There are a lot of rules and dress-codes in the fancy world of weddings – for instance, only the bride should wear white and the bridesmaids’ dresses should ultimately complement each other. And as for the mother of the groom, her look should be ever-so understated and in harmony with the mother of the bride’s dress.

Basic traditional guidelines clearly state that the mother of the groom should wait for the mother of the bride to choose her dress before picking hers, in order for them to complement each other. That said, both dresses should obviously not match but merely flow well together. And one of the many bridal protocols require her to steer clear of off-white and white derivatives so she doesn’t steal the bride’s thunder. But of course, since we’re in the 21st century and rules are always meant to be broken, the guidelines have been revisited and have given the mother of the groom much more liberty in her choices. At the end of the day, what matters most is that the bridal “party” is happy and so, the mother of the groom should always check with the bride and groom when it comes to the dress.
