A Conversation with Ariel de Ravenel

by Leonore Dicker

In the past couple of years, Yves Saint Laurent’s story has been recounted through films, books and testimonies. The good, the bad and the ugly bits of his life have been represented –and possibly misrepresented– for the entire world to see. The good has essentially been pure genius for YSL, who was lucky enough to have found quite a brilliant muse. As the saying goes “behind every great man stands a strong woman”, and in Yves’ case, this woman was legendary model, jewelry designer and stylist Loulou de la Falaise.

To commemorate this powerful goddess who sadly passed away in 2011, Rizzoli has teamed up with one of her dearest friends Ariel de Ravenel –as well as Pierre Bergé, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni and her widower Thadée Klossowski– to assemble an elegant volume on her sparkling life.

I met up with the ever so chic Ariel–who elegantly wore a Theory black-and-white outfit designed by Olivier Theyskens (another one of her close friends) and a blue and green necklace by Loulou herself– at Rabih Kayrouz’ Beirut-based boutique. With tinsels in her eyes, Ariel discussed her history with Yves and her love for Loulou.

What’s your history with Yves Saint Laurent?
I was very close to both Yves and Pierre Bergé. I met Yves in the late 60’s. How we met exactly is a bit of a blur, but I can tell you that it was a lasting friendship.

How would you describe Loulou?
In three words: charming, chic and charismatic!

What’s your fondest memory of her?
I loved our business trips together, especially those we took to India. We always found ourselves in the most absurd but fabulous situations!

What made you want to write this book?
I was approached right after her passing. At first it was hard for me, but I quickly accepted the offer as it enabled me to keep her close to me for that little extra time. Writing this book truly helped me grieve!

What’s your favorite YSL item?
I used to be obsessed with this stunning ethnic kilt! Loulou actually wore it in a 1972 shoot for ELLE that’s featured in the book.

Loulou de la Falaise was Yves Saint Laurent’s muse. Who is your muse?
Kate Moss, she’s so timeless and chic!

Who would you say is the closest thing to the modern-day Loulou?
I would probably have to say Kate Moss. She was actually very much admired by Loulou. Both women have stayed at the top through time and continuously inspire. Kate has been doing her thing since she was 15 and Loulou is Loulou!
