2014’s Most Stylish Films

by Leonore Dicker

Since the award season is upon us, we’ve decided to put together a list of the most stylish films of 2014. The films, characters and stylists below have inspired designers, street-stylers and magazines all over the world. They might not win a Golden Globe or an Oscar, but they’ve earned the respect of many fashionistas.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
Most Stylish Film

Unlike most films, The Grand Budapest Hotel ticks all of the fashion boxes. Three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Milena Canonero was personally chosen by Wes Anderson to work her magic. Anyone who has seen the film will agree that she did a beautiful job. Canonero, who designed most of the garbs herself, was inspired by painter Gustav Klimt and photographer Man Ray.

The Mockingjay Part 1
Most Creative Character

Effie Trinket, played by Elizabeth Banks, is one of the most inspirational fashion characters we’ve ever come across. In The Mockingjay Part 1 –which is greyer than the former Hunger Games– Trinket doesn’t have access to her usual stunning gowns, glitters and makeup. She is left with very limited options but a lot of imagination. In any given situation she's able to make her look (in this case a gawky prison-like uniform) stylishly her own and different by incorporating an accessory, either a headpiece, or by opening buttons. Her inspiring character demonstrates how style is irrelevant to class and means, but is all about self-expression and creativity.

Magic in the Moonlight
Most Realistic Stylist

In Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight, which is set on the French Riviera in the 1920s,Sophie Baker –a character played by Emma Stone– fools a rich family and a famous illusionist and pretends to be a clairvoyant. Finding an adequate style for a manipulative, beautiful woman isn’t easy but designer Sonia Grande was spot on with her gracefully “astute” looks.

Into The Woods
Most enchanting costume designer

In this musical fantasy directed by Rob Marshall, Emily Blunt –who plays The Baker’s Wife– has been cursed by a witch and is consequently unable to have children. The film follows her and her husband’s quest to undo the curse. Costume designer Colleen Atwood beautifully dressed Blunt in an utmost charming way. She may not be a princess, or a queen – but in this film she looks like quite the lady.

The Theory of Everything
Most romantic costume designer

This romantic drama portrays the love affair between the famous physicist Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde –played by Felicity Jones– a literature student he fell in love with in the 1960’s. Costume designer Steven Noble perfectly represented the era, social group and romanticism of the film. Throughout the movie, Jones wears delicate designs in pastel tints.
