Fashion designers are often flamboyant characters. They ooze creativity and charisma amongst other things. What many also have in common is a passionate soul. This deep-rooted fury sometimes translates as a will to change the world and make it a better place. From fighting racism and employing ethnic models for their campaigns to donating proceeds to various charities, all have somehow made their positive mark.

Since people often choose to talk about the bad, and remain quiet about the good – Azyaamode decided to honor some of these designers and list their deeds.

The French label Kenzo believes in protecting the ocean and its creatures and has recently launched its NoFishNoNothing line in the shape of a digital pop-up store in support of the brand’s long-term partnership with Blue Marine Foundation: an environmental conservation organization. Through their #NoFishNoNothing hash tag – which took over social media – and their “No Fish No Nothing” slogan printed on sweaters, Kenzo was able to raise awareness on a cause many tend to overlook.

Stella McCartney also believes in protecting animals – but isn’t exclusive to those living in the sea. Being a lacto-ovo-vegetarian (a vegetarian who doesn’t eat any type of animal flesh, but who does consume eggs and dairy), the designer has a no animal policy. Fur and leather are completely excluded from her designs, which can be tricky (especially with shoes), but has earned her her status as one of the industry’s most environmentally friendly designers.

The extravagant Vivienne Westwood is another example of a designer who vividly fights to make a change. From joining anti-capitalist protesters at the Occupy London Stock Exchange a couple of years ago to recently shaving her signature red hair to rally climate change – there’s no stopping miss Westwood. Going bald in an industry that is perceived as superficial by many was a bold move and will most definitely have its impact.

Another ferociously strong woman is Diane Von Furstenberg. The cause this designer has always held the closest to her heart is to empower women. To support this belief, she’s joined forces with Vital Voices, a charity that gives extraordinary women around the world all of the tools, connections and credibility needed to unleash their potential and enable them to shine. DVF’s own designs are often stamped with slogans, such as “proud to be a woman”, which diffuse confidence and poise.

Donna Karan (Urban Zen Foundation), Michael Kors (God’s Love We Deliver & United Nations’ World Food Programme) and Zac Posen  (TeachersCount & New Yorkers for Children), are also among those generous leading fashion icons who have relentlessly contributed to charitable groups and foundations.
