Welcome to Marfa: a cultural oasis in the middle of the dessert. At first, you may believe it’s a mirage, a fragment of your imagination, but you’d be wrong, as Texas does hold a city founded in the early 1880s that has become a hub for minimalist art.
From the internationally renowned Chinati Foundation, which is an old military base converted into a massive center for contemporary art, to the mysterious Marfa lights found on Route 67 that glow in the Texan sky, this tiny town is filled with curious wonders. Another marvelous vision is Prada Marfa, a permanent Prada booth installation by artists Elmgreen and Dragset that is set by the highway.
This is not your usual scene. Don’t expect to spot any of the big fast food chains or stores here. What you get instead is a funeral parlor transformed into a bar (Padres Marfa) and a Laundromat with an ice-cream parlor (Tumbleweed). Now, doesn’t that sound fab?
For a fancy meal and delicious drinks, stop over Cochineal restaurant. Maiya’s serves some excellent homemade pasta, while Food Truck is ideal for an on-the-go gourmet experience. Though Pizza Foundation sure knows how to master thin-crust, Museum of Electronic Wonders and late Night Grilled Cheese Parlour is a funky spot for some cheesy toasts. Thirsty? Try one of Squeeze Marfa’s refreshing juices.
Shop ‘til you drop Texas style by hitting the Cobra Rock Boot Company for some cowboy boots. For great handmade souvenirs – like rugs or pottery –give Tienda M a little visit. But if geek-chic is your style of choice, then Marfa Book Co is the right boutique to studiously complete your look.
For a full outlook and breath-taking experience, we highly recommend that you glide over Marfa in a mini-plane. Sometimes, doing things over-the-top is simply a must!
