Queen Victoria

Probably one of the most powerful women in history, Queen Victoria was not only the Queen of the United Kingdom and Ireland, but she was also the first one to spark the “white bridal dress” trend in a time where white wasn’t necessarily the norm. Her royal marriage with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1840 was quite the groundbreaker, as she forbade guests to wear white and- wait for it- had the exceptional pattern for her gown completely destroyed to avoid any imitations. Safe to say, Queen Victoria put her personal stamp on weddings and clearly, the whole world has followed suit.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Edinburgh’s big day at Westminster Abbey in 1947 was broadcast to the whole world, but the thing that stood out the most was the Queen’s beautiful wedding dress. Designed by British couturier Sir Norman Hartnell, the sumptuous gown was a beautiful combination of soft silk and rich embroideries with a high neckline, worthy of the Queen’s irrefutable legacy.

Audrey Hepburn

Picking your favorite Audrey Hepburn look is like picking your favorite fast-food meal- impossible. But the British actress and model was mostly known for her classic style and her rising status as fashion icon. Though she had been married one too many times, she wore her most glorified wedding dress during her marriage with Mel Ferrer in 1954. The midi-length dress was designed by Pierre Balmain himself, and took the form of a satin balloon-sleeved wonder with a high-collar neck. And with a flower crown atop her head, Hepburn looked as charming as ever walking down the aisle.

For her walk down the aisle with Conrad Nicky Hilton Jr, Elizabeth Taylor chose a satin wedding gown designed by MGM couturier Helen Rose. The off-the-shoulder bridal dress complete with a see-through collar was the cherry on top of a virtuoso wedding, with more A-listers than family members attending the start-studded social event.

The marriage of American actress Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 was the closest thing to a real-life fairytale. Her gown was considered the most iconic attire in the world of fashion, as it is until this very day extremely well preserved. Designed by Helen Rose of MGM, the opulent gown was positively magical, revealing three layers of petticoat, 25 yards of silk taffeta, pearls and delicate lace. It was that dress in particular that converted the actress into European Royalty.
