Did You Know…The History of Gloves?

Why do we love gloves? Let us count the reasons: they’re stylish, they keep us warm and nothing rivals the way they make everything look utterly elegant!

But enough about their attributes. Let’s take a moment to focus on their origins. Historians date gloves all the way back to the medieval ages, where the simple act of wearing them screamed nobility and power. Most commonly worn by royalty, gloves moved unto a more ceremonial path, allowing knights to adorn their hands with a token of status. Fast-forward to the Renaissance period when women developed an uncanny love for gloves, as they frosted their hands in embroidered gloves made out of silk, linen or even leather. Then, Queen Elizabeth I made gloves a mainstay in her wardrobe, debuting a stylish movement for centuries to come!

And the rest was pure history; as women got more into fashion, they altered the way of wearing gloves, extending their length unto their elbows- or what we call the princess gloves. But above all, the surge in popularity of gloves in the late 1950s was massive, as it represented utter femininity and the trend succeeded with flying colors following Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s! Satin gloves, anyone?
