A few clues that will confirm you are at a Middle Eastern wedding are Jordanian Almonds on the table. Ever wonder what these symbolize?
The almonds are dipped in a candy-like substance, otherwise known as dragée, that come in various soft pastels colors or silver and gold. Single women are often told to eat this as a "good luck" token in order to find their future husband. The main reason behind this tradition is to give 5 wishes to the newlyweds. Five almonds are given to the guests and symbolize:
Happiness
Health
Prosperity
Fertility
Long Life
Even if a guest was unable to attend the wedding, while visiting the family they are most definitely given these almonds as a symbol of sharing these good wishes.
Another really fun tradition is hiring a belly dancer. Besides creating an excited atmosphere, traditionally the purpose behind it is to get the bride and groom in the mood for their honeymoon.
