Did You Know… Why Is It Called a Sneaker?

You pair them with pants and dresses, you wear them while you work out and you’ve certainly developed an unrealistic love for them! Sneakers are truly a human’s best friend! But have you ever stopped to wonder where the somehow-alluring name came from?

Let’s take a step back and rewind, shall we?

Back in the 18th century, people used to walk in rubber soles- also known as “plimsolls”- as to “sneak” up on others. Why? Simply because the soft-soled shoes were so quiet, they made it that much easier! But the sneakers revolution started in the 1800’s, when the U.S Rubber Company created more comfortable sneakers, which are known as the distinguishable “Keds”. The word caught on real quick and so the astonishing frenzy began, right along with the industrial revolution.

These classic items took a toll on the world as different entrepreneurs began acquiring them, from Marquis Converse, the creator of Converse All-Stars to Adi Dassler, Adidas’ creator. Since then, the “silent shoes” became THE shoes and we have the term of “sneaking around” to thank for!
