Did You Know…British Hats Were Queen Elizabeth I 's Doing?

We’ve all heard of fancy horse races, over-the-top weddings and lavish brunches chockfull of big hats and extravagant head accessories. But not many of you know that this trend is of British descent, more specifically harnessed by the great Queen Elizabeth I. True story.

The British love of hats dates back to 1571, when Queen Elizabeth I championed a “special” law dictating that everyone over the age of seven should abide by the “hat” rule. In other terms, on Sundays, we wear hats! Granted, this law is no longer valid, but the upper-British-class is often spotted wearing overzealous and loaded headwear with pride. Ceremonies have become overflown with embellished accessories. Think Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. The hat reign obviously settled among “commoners” and the “rich” for many centuries to come, but it has also become a symbol of great fashion sense, as designers have molded this trend to recreate their own special thing.

With hats perched atop their hair, British legacies have made a name for themselves throughout history and now more than ever, garden parties, weddings and many more daytime events are bringing their own special twist to the theme at play!
