The Original Supermodels of the 90’s

by Leonore Dicker

These days, it’s all about Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne. They’re in every runway show, magazine spread and campaign. But remember the days when these two were just toddlers and the original goddesses were running fashion? Here are the 10 greatest supermodels of the 90’s.

Kate Moss
This British beauty was scouted by the founder of Storm Model Management at the airport when she was just a teen. She started off as Calvin Klein’s cover girl in the early 90’s and has now become a world-known icon. Many consider Cara Delevingne to be a modern-day Kate Moss.

Helena Christensen
If you followed fashion in the nineties, then this name –and face– should look familiar. Helena, who is half-Danish, half-Peruvian, is a former Victoria’s Secret Angel and was actually also the creative director of Nylon magazine for a while. She’s been on multiple covers, including Vogue and ELLE and fashion campaigns, like Chanel and Versace.

Christy Turlington
This girl was the face of Calvin Klein in the nineties. She’s been featured in a handful of music videos, including George Michael’s “Freedom!” She was named one of the "Modern Muses" on the November 1999 Millennium cover of American Vogue.

Linda Evangelista
How many people can say that they’ve been featured on over 700 magazine covers? Very few and Linda Evangelista is one of them. This Canadian model won’t “wake up for less than $10,000 a day”. It all began when she took part in a beauty pageant and Elite Model Management noticed her. Her career quickly picked up after that.

Eva Herzigová
Eva’s big break happened when she was selected to be the spokes model for Wonderbra. Not many models are blessed with beautiful curves like Eva’s, so she consequently became one of Victoria Secret’s favorite faces. You also may have spotted this Czech beauty in numerous films, including Inferno.

Karen Mulder
This Dutch model has walked down plenty of runways and been in numerous campaigns. She’s posed for the Victoria’s Secret catalogue and has had an entire issue of Italian Vogue devoted to her. Believe it or not but her family signed her up for a “Look of the Year” contest by Elite Model Management without her knowledge. Karen came second and then her career exploded.

Naomi Campbell
Scouted at the age of 15, Naomi has made quite a name for herself since. Her first appearance was in 1978, at the age of 7, when she was featured in Bob Marley’s video “Is this Love”. In September 1991, she was the first black model to appear on the cover of Time magazine. While her fame is extraordinary, she’s been known to be somewhat of a diva.

Cindy Crawford
Cindy Crawford –who has been named one of the "100 Hottest Women of All-Time" by Men's Health– is widely known for her signature mole next to her lip. During the nineties, this girl was everywhere. Think of any magazine, and she’s most definitely already been on the cover. She’s also acted in various films and TV series.

Claudia Schiffer
Claudia is by far one of the most successful models of all time. Many believe that this German model resembles Brigitte Bardot. Her career picked up when Guess Jeans featured her in their highly publicized campaign. Soon after that Karl Lagerfeld asked her to become the new face of Chanel and everything followed quickly.

Tyra Banks
You might know Tyra from the reality TV show “America’s Next Top Model” – but her career really began when she signed with Elite at the age of 16. In 1991’s Paris Fashion Week, she was booked in 25 shows. She was the first African American model on the covers of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and GQ. She’s also been in countless films and series. Her success is still budding.
