Hats are both a timeless trend and a sign of sophistication and men in general, love wearing them. A gentleman can be known from the way he deals with his hat.

If you enter an elevator and you find a man wearing a hat, he is supposed to take it off and put it back on once he exits and is in the corridor. This rule applies to elevators in hotels, clubs and apartments. Unlike the aforementioned, elevators in office buildings and stores are considered a public place like corridors. 

When a gentleman stops in the street to speak to a lady he knows, he takes his hat off with his left hand and uses his right one to shake hands. He can put it back on if they walk together, as there is nothing ruder than a man speaking to a lady while wearing a hat especially if he has a cigar or a cigarette in his mouth!
