For its Fall/Winter 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection, Max Mara takes us on a trip back in time, to the 18th century and finds inspiration in Émilie du Châtelet, the free-spirited Marquise whose philosophical magnum opus set the tone for rational thinking during the Enlightenment, and her man Voltaire who was described as ‘Europe’s first truly modern celebrity’. In this quest for modernity, the destination was a wardrobe for the now and this collection brought every idea of it to life…
In fact, the collection speaks to women like Émilie, ones whose wit and intellect are key elements to produce change. Walking down the runway were rich brocade fabrics, as well as bustier and chemises executed with sharp Newtonian precision and paired with minimalistic turtlenecks and chunky boots. Anachronistic drawstrings and sporty pockets adorned pannier skirts that either came above the knee or ankle length. A fishtail parka in camel color made an appearance in a projection to the future, while the Watteau back, used in contemporary court dresses, found its place on a military greatcoat and a snappy little cocktail dress.
Was it a great salute to Camelocracy? Definitely!
