As plus-size women start to appear more frequently on the runways, fashion takes a new turn – one that gives every fashion guru, regardless of the shape and size of her body, the inspiration needed to fill her with the self-confidence to pull off the most flattering looks to her figure. Many brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Chloé – to name a few – started introducing this idea through their shows and collections, while Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) presented its first ever Curve Edit, a show recognizing designers who create pieces for mid- and plus-sized bodies. As part of this movement that encourages every woman to embrace her curves, Azyaamode offers its share of tips to put them on the top of their fashion game!

  • If you’re curvy, it’s very important to pick the right size of clothing. Trying to fit in a smaller size will only result in making you look bigger. Take your undergarments as a reference and as long as you don’t see their lines through the dress, you’re on the right track.
  • Show off your curves in the right way and direct the focus away from your problem areas. If you have a small waist, showcase it by choosing the pieces that flaunt it, while if your tummy makes you feel insecure, avoid wearing tight attires that bring the attention to it.
  • Think of wrap dresses as your best friends. These marvels tie on the slimmest area of your body – which is your natural waist – and give you a beautiful hourglass shape while hiding your bumps.
  • Avoid tent dresses. You might think that they hide your curves but in fact, they make you look bigger.
  • Wear tops and bottoms in one color. This visual trick is always a winner as it won’t draw the attention to a specific area of your body.
  • Don’t be afraid of layering. Contrary to popular belief, this trend isn’t necessarily synonymous with additional volume. A cardigan thrown over a tank top will actually accentuate your shape better than a t-shirt.
  • Leggings are a no-no. They are not pants!
  • Favor high-waisted bottoms. They are real game changers for curvy bodies and much more flattering.
  • Choose flowy fabrics or size up! Of course, stretchy materials are great at making you feel comfortable and tucking your body in but it’s very important not to choose a small size that shows off your curves. Therefore, the best solution is to choose a bigger size. This doesn’t, by any way, mean to go oversize with everything you choose to wear.
  • For special occasions, don’t panic. Take tailoring into consideration, as made-to-measure outfits can be pretty convenient and flattering.
  • When it comes to accessories, opt for a beautiful belt that gives your body a beautiful hourglass shape. This magic trick will make your waist look smaller.
  • Are you into suits? You can certainly pull one off and a small accessory is all you need to make your look a real game changer. Opt for a tie! This will not only add pizzazz to your outfit but will also create the illusion of a lengthy torso.
  • Favor long chains over chokers, especially if you have a short neck. A long scarf can be a great option if you’re not in the mood to wear jewelry.
  • Pick the right shoes. Wear high heels that make you look taller and slimmer – even kitten heels work. Avoid those with straps around the ankle as they will make your legs look shorter.
  • Choose the right size of bags. Medium-sized ones are the best of you, but you can still opt for smaller ones as long as you can see them behind your hand. If you don’t, then they’re too small.
  • Dress with confidence. Nothing like your self-confidence can make you look like a dream!
