CHARM SCHOOL – A Guide to Gym Etiquette

by Leonore Dicker

Seeing as summer is on its way, the gym has most likely become your second home. While we encourage you to stay motivated and go all out on your workout, it’s also important to remain respectful.

If the gym is packed, make sure not to use a machine for any longer than 20 minutes. Others may want to use it too and it’s essential to be considerate. Once you’re done using a device, wipe off any sweat you may have left behind.

Try not to stare at others while they’re working out, it can be intimidating and be considered rude. If you ever make eye contact with anyone, make sure to immediately give them a smile! This might even boost their self-confidence.

While there’s nothing wrong with making new friends, don’t speak to anyone who has their headphones in. They most definitely don’t want to be disturbed. The best place to chitchat is by the water dispenser, as it’s clear that the person is taking a break.

As to not disturb anyone, avoid wearing any perfume at the gym. The strong smell might be disconcerting to some.

In the changing room, make sure to remain hygienic, to groom in private and respect people’s space!

And Remember:

-To return used equipment (like weights) to their rightful place
-Not to answer a phone call while at the gym
-Remain quiet and respectful of others
